World Arts and Cultures professor Peter Sellars, a director of opera, theater and film renowned worldwide for his innovative treatments of classical material, will present “Lagrime di San Pietro” (“Tears of St. Peter”) at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Oct. 29-30.
Sellars will direct the Renaissance a capella masterpiece, composed in the 16th century by Orlando di Lasso and set to the poetry of Luigi Tansillo, will be performed in a dramatic staging by 21 singers from the Grammy Award-nominated Los Angeles Master Chorale. Based on the theme “I take responsibility,” “Lagrime di San Pietro” depicts the seven stages of grief that St. Peter experienced after disavowing his knowledge of Jesus on the day he was arrested. Sellars translates the work for a contemporary audience into an allegory about taking personal responsibility and facing regrets head-on to forge a more fulfilling future.
Sellars has served as artistic director of the Los Angeles Festival, the American National Theatre at the Kennedy Center, the Boston Shakespeare Company and the Elitch Theatre for Children in Denver. Among his many honors, he is a recipient of the MacArthur Prize Fellowship and was awarded the Erasmus Prize at the Dutch Royal Palace for contributions to European culture.
