Robin D.G. Kelley, distinguished professor and Gary B. Nash endowed chair in U.S. history and black studies, has received the Nicolás Guillén lifetime achievement award from the Caribbean Philosophical Association. Kelley is being honored for his work in bringing together the history of African diasporic radical politics with the life-affirming creativity of Black aesthetic production.
The Caribbean Philosophical Association recognizes those who have made contributions to philosophical thought, literature, and mentorship. The selections are made annually by an awards committee, which consists of all prior recipients of the awards and an appointed senior and junior scholar.
Kelley’s published works include “Hammer and Hoe,” “Race Rebels,” “Freedom Dreams,” “Into the Fire,” “Thelonius Monk,” and “Africa Speaks, America Answers!: Modern Jazz in Revolutionary Times.” His recent writings have focused on the arts and he is also known for his writings on Negritude poets.
