Photography by James Welling, professor at UCLA’s School of the Arts and Architecture, is on exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Showing through April 12, 2015, is “Diary of Elizabeth and James Dixon, 1840–41 / Connecticut Landscapes, 1977–86,” part of Welling’s “Diary/Landscape” body of work, which the Art Institute said “heralded the Pictures Generation and the centrality of photography to contemporary art. It was also a means of tying together his disparate interests, from the antiquarian (Civil War history, the watercolors of Andrew Wyeth, the landscapes of Paul Strand) to the contemporary (emergent postmodernist theory, punk rock, the downtown New York scene).”
Welling has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. Most recently, in 2013, his retrospective exhibition, “James Welling Monograph,” originated at the Cincinnati Art Museum and traveled to UCLA’s Hammer Museum and the Fotomuseum Winterthur in Switzerland. In 2012, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut exhibited Welling's project, "Wyeth," a suite of photographs made in the same locations that Andrew Wyeth painted.
Welling's books include “Monograph” (2013), “Glass House” (2011); “Light Sources” (2011), “Flowers” (2006); “James Welling Photographs 1974-99” (2000); “Wolfsburg” (1994); “Usines de Dentelle” (1993) and “Les Voies Ferrées/St. Etienne et La Plaine du Forez” (1990).
Welling produced the feature film, “The Moment,” which premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival.
