Sociology professor emeritus David Lopez has been appointed inaugural UCLA faculty retirement liaison. His appointment, which was effective April 1, was announced by Carole Goldberg, Vice Chancellor, Academic Personnel.
Lopez will serve as an advisor and advocate for faculty who are considering retirement and those who have already retired. He will provide assistance to faculty in securing information from their department or school as well as from campus and university sources such as the human resources benefits office. Lopez will also be available to help faculty members structure and negotiate pre- and post-retirement arrangements, including Pathways to Retirement agreements, allocations of space and access to the research professor” working title.
Goldberg noted, “Professor Lopez brings highly relevant experience to his new role,” including service as chair of the UCLA Department of Sociology, associate dean of the Graduate Division, chair of the Academic Senate’s Council on Planning and Budget and chair of the senate’s Committees on Faculty Welfare and Emeriti Affairs.
“His new position supports an important campus initiative to assist faculty in making continuing contributions to UCLA’s research, teaching, and service missions post-retirement,” said Goldberg. “Indeed, David’s own service to the campus exemplifies the value emeriti can bring.”
