Janet Bergstrom, UCLA professor of cinema and media studies, delivered a keynote lecture for the international conference, "The Magic of Special Effects: Cinema-Technology-Reception," in Montreal, Quebec.
 
Her lecture, "Murnau’s ‘Sunrise’: In-Camera Effects and Effects Specialists," discussed the achievement and function of specific shots in the 1927 Academy Award-winning film, "Sunrise."Bergstrom also highlighted the film’s use of outside "effects specialists" in its making. "Sunrise"won three Oscars in that year.
 
Bergstrom's current research involves archivally based, cross-cultural studies of European directors who worked in more than one national cinema, such as Jean Renoir, F.W. Murnau and Fritz Lang, as well as contemporary French/Francophone directors Claire Denis and Chantal Akerman. Her work has been published in English, French, German, Italian and Japanese.
