Treat the kids — and your inner kid — to a free Family Flicks screening of “Matilda” (1996), presented by the UCLA Film and Television Archive at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 in the Billy Wilder Theater at the UCLA Hammer Museum.
A uniquely precocious child whose many talents extend to the supernatural, Matilda (Mara Wilson) was born into a family of self-absorbed brutes (Danny DeVito as dad, Rhea Perlman as mom) who are oblivious to the pint-sized wonder in their midst. When she finds a kindred spirit in a teacher, Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz), the two take on their tormentors in this charmingly offbeat — and slightly dark — fairytale adapted from Roald Dahl’s novel by the same name. Recommended for ages 9 and older.
