Six UCLA professors have been elected to the 2018 class of the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. Fellows are nominated each year by their peers and represent the top two percent of the medical and biological engineering community.
Dr. Denise Aberle is a professor of radiology in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a professor of bioengineering in the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering. She received the award for her work on CT screening for early lung cancer detection.
Bahram Jalali is a professor of electrical and computer engineering, with appointments in bioengineering, surgery and is a member of the California NanoSystems Institute. Jalali is the Northrop Grumman Professor of Opto-Electronics. He is being recognized for his work pioneering contributions to biomedical instrumentation, imaging and diagnostic systems.
Wentai Liu is a distinguished professor of bioengineering, and electrical and computer engineering at UCLA. Liu was honored for his work on electronically aided neural prosthetic devices that help restore eyesight and motor functions.
Asad Madni is a distinguished adjunct professor of electrical and computer engineering. Madni’s work focuses on the development and commercialization of sensors and systems for biomedical instrumentation and aerospace and automotive safety.
Albert Thomas is a professor of radiology with appointments in psychiatry and bioengineering. He received the award for his research into new magnetic resonance techniques to produce images of human tissues in vivo.
Gerard Wong is a professor of bioengineering, chemistry and biochemistry at UCLA. He is a member of the California NanoSystems Institute. Wong has been named a fellow for his work on antibiotic tolerant infections.
