UCLA staff is invited to attend an information session about the Geffen Academy at UCLA Initiative on Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. in Charles E. Young Research Library Room 11360. Sibyll Carnochan Catalan, director of the initiave and the head of the school, will explain how the Geffen Academy at UCLA will build on UCLA’s mission of teaching, research, and service to provide a challenging and engaging secondary education for children of UCLA faculty and staff and families across Los Angeles. she leads UCLA’s work to create a middle and secondary school to provide students with an educational experience designed for the 21st century.
Prior to joining UCLA, Catalan created and led a fellowship for outstanding public school teachers and principals from across the country. An initiative of America Achieves, the Teacher and Principal Fellowship honors and showcases the work of outstanding educators, bringing what’s inside great classrooms to outside audiences, including policymakers.
Catalan also has worked in numerous other educational settings, including the Broad Foundation; U.S. Congress’ Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, Education, and Labor; the Council of Chief State School Officers; and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
She holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University, an Ed.M. from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.
