A guest house designed by Steven Christensen, a lecturer in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design in the UCLA School of Arts and Architecture, was selected by the American Institute of Architects to be included in its Emerging Professionals Exhibition in Washington, D.C. This annual exhibition promotes the compelling work of the rising generation of architects and designers and inspires professionals to continue to mentor and engage the many talented and motivated emerging professionals across the country.
Christensen's design, called the Heptagon House, resides in Heceta Beach, Oregon. Its design offers a geometric solution to a set of financial and regulatory challenges. The Heptagon House uses an opportunistic approach to underutilized spaces in order to fit a two-bedroom, two-bathroom guest house onto a tiny footprint. Spaces planes are used strategically, such as a shower bench in the bath, an elevated bed/lounge with storage in the bedroom/study and a stair to the second floor that ascends on an oblique.
