Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is airing a 50th anniversary tribute to the UCLA Film and Television Archive on Wednesday, July 15, beginning at 5 p.m. (PDT).
Jan-Christopher Horak, director of the archive since 2007, will co-host the tribute with film critic Ben Mankewiecz. Five feature films restored by the archive will be shown as well as several rarely seen shorts and newsreels. The feature films are:
- “Her Sister’s Secret” (1946), directed by Edgar G. Ulmer
- “Turnabout” (1940), a screwball comedy starring John Hubbard and Carole Landis
- “The Night of the Hunter” (1955), an iconic gothic drama
- “Wanda” (1970), an indie drama directed by and starring Barbara Loden
- “Pitfall” (1948), a film noir thriller with Dick Powell and Raymond Burr
The UCLA Film and Television Archive is renowned for its pioneering efforts to rescue, preserve and showcase moving image media and is dedicated to ensuring that the collective visual memory of our time is explored and enjoyed for generations to come. A public arts unit of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, the archive is a unique resource for media study and one of the largest repositories of moving image materials in the world. Its Research and Study Center provides free access to its holdings to international researchers from all disciplines. The archive is well-known for its moving image restoration efforts, and many of its projects are invited to screen at prestigious events around the globe in addition to being shown locally at UCLA’s Billy Wilder Theater.
