In August, four researchers formed Team UCLA to take part in Charity Treks, a weeklong bike ride to raise funds for HIV/AIDS research at the UCLA AIDS Institute and the Emory Vaccine Research Center.
Team members were doctoral student Christian Aguilera, postdoctoral scholar Anjie Zhen and Professor of hematology/oncology Beth Jamieson, all of whom volunteered as race crew; and physician and pediatric AIDS expert Dr. Paul Krogstad, who rode the 400-mile course from Burlington, Vermont, to Portland, Maine.
Charity Treks riders raise funds through race registration and sponsorship from colleagues, family and friends. Since its inception in 2003, the organization has given over $1 million in grants to its beneficiaries.
“These funds are critical for the testing of novel ideas that are too early in development for funding by the federal government," said researcher Jamieson.
