Teresa McCarty, UCLA's George Kneller Chair in Education and Anthropology, has been selected by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) to give the 2015 Brown Lecture in Education Research. McCarty will speak on issues of Indigenous education on Oct. 22, in Washington, D.C. A live stream of the lecture will be on view at UCLA in the Moore Hall Reading Room (Room 3340) from 3-4:30 p.m., with light refreshments provided.

McCarty was selected by AERA to give the lecture based on her extensive work on language education policy, Indigenous education, youth language and literacy learning and ethnographic studies of education. Her book, “To Remain an Indian: Lessons in Democracy from a Century of Native American Education” (Teachers College Press, 2006), co-authored with K. Tsianina Lomawaima of Arizona State University, won the AERA Outstanding Book Award in 2007.

The Brown Lecture in Education Research was established in 2004 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, in which the U.S. Supreme Court took scientific research into account in issuing its landmark ruling striking down the “separate but equal” doctrine of racially segregated schooling. McCarty’s talk is the first Brown lecture to focus on indigenous education issues.
