UCLA’s postdoctoral scholars were recently honored for their important contributions to UCLA’s interrelated missions of research, teaching and public service at the 2017 Postdoctoral Scholars Reception and Awards Ceremony at the California NanoSystems Institute. The 2017 Chancellor’s Awards for Postdoctoral Research were also presented during the celebration.

Of the 1,314 postdoctoral scholars, 18 were nominated for this prestigious award that recognizes individual research accomplishments that show clear potential to have meaningful and enduring implications in their field.

Four of the 18 nominees were selected to receive the Chancellor’s Award for Postdoctoral Research — a $5,000 prize — for their research accomplishments.

  • Zeyan Liew, whose research investigates environmental epidemiology, reproductive health, and fetal programming and life course epidemiology;
  • Joseph McGuire, whose research focuses on behavior therapy, clinical psychology, obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychopathology and cognitive behavior therapy;
  • Kang Yang, whose work utilizes satellite remote sensing to study meltwater runoff processes on the Greenland Ice Sheet in research funded by a NASA cryospheric project;
  • And Yongsoo Yang, whose research develops and explores atomic electron tomography, which allows for measurements of 3-D positions and atomic species of individual atoms.
