Almost no health data exist on transgender Americans, a group that continues to face widespread discrimination and possible related adverse health consequences. Data collection on this marginalized group presents significant challenges to general population health surveys like the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS).

Join Matt Jans, CHIS survey methodologist with the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research (CHPR), on Tuesday, Jan. 26, noon-1 p.m., to learn about the cutting-edge work that CHIS has done in collaboration with UCLA's Williams Institute to establish feasible ways to accurately measure gender identity.

Jans will present results of an experimental test of gender identity questions and discuss their implications for gender identity measurement in surveys more broadly. The experiment has informed the current CHIS practice of asking gender identity of adults interviewed in the 2015-2016 CHIS cycle. Implications for collecting public health data among transgender people will also be discussed.

This seminar, is part of the Center's 2016 Health Policy Seminar Series, is a must for researchers and advocates working within LGBT communities, as well as for survey researchers and methodologists interested in understanding how seemingly sensitive and sometimes fluid identity definitions can accurately be navigated when conducting a large telephone survey.

Attend the seminar in-person at the Center’s offices at 10960 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 1550, or see it live -streamed here.
