Two UCLA emeriti professors, pediatric surgeon Dr. Eric Fonkalsrud and Howard Suber of the School of Theater, Film and Television, have been selected to receive the 2014 Dickson Emeritus Professorship Award, one of the highest awards given to emeriti faculty at UCLA. The UCLA Emeriti Association will present the awards, which includes a prize of $5,000, at a dinner on May 14.
The award honors outstanding research, scholarly work, teaching and service performed by an emeritus or emerita professor since retirement. It is funded from a gift endowment established by the late Edward A. Dickson, a regent of the University of California from 1913-1946.
"Eric Fonkalsrud is an inspirational mentor and a master surgeon who is revered by colleagues, trainees, and his patients," wrote Carole Goldberg, vice chancellor for academic personnel, in announcing the recipients of this year's award. "He is among the founders of the specialty of pediatric surgery and has been president of numerous surgical organizations. He continues to be a thought leader in his field and to contribute to his extensive body of scholarly work. Throughout his years as an emeritus faculty member he has been available as a mentor, advisor and friend to his colleagues."
