UCLA is not only a powerhouse of climate change and sustainability research, but also a living laboratory where new green ideas are tested out. A significant amount of that work is done by or in collaboration with UCLA’s Facilities Management department, which this week received a 2014 Sustainability Award in Facilities Management from APPA, a professional organization for facilities managers at educational institutions.
The award recognizes Facilities Management's efforts to embed sustainable practices throughout the campus.
UCLA’s forays into green living include its own power plant, which provides significantly cleaner, more efficiently produced energy than the city’s utility; a pilot project using electric-vehicle charging stations to draw power from the cars to run the electric grid; more than a dozen certified green buildings and more than another dozen in the works; energy-efficient retrofits of campus heating and air-conditioning systems; and sustainable food and purchasing programs to ensure even UCLA’s buying power is used responsibly.
