Kent Wong, the director of the UCLA Labor Center, was recently recognized by the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles at its Historymakers Awards Gala. Wong was given the Excellence in Law and Justice Award on Sept. 15. The Historymaker Awards recognize leaders and organizations that make a significant impact or lasting contribution to the Chinese-American community through advocacy, entertainment, community service and other means.
Wong is director of the UCLA Labor Center and a professor of Asian American studies. Prior to his position at the center, he worked as a staff attorney for the Service Employees International Union and founded both the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance and the United Association for Labor Education. Currently, he also serves as the vice president of the California Federation of Teachers.
In addition to his past advocacy for workers and students, Wong was honored for his work in obtaining a wage theft settlement for employees of the Chinese Daily News. He was presented with the award by Los Angeles City Councilmember Gil Cedillo.
