Ann Carlson, a visiting professor in the UCLA Department of World Arts and Culture/Dance, has been honored with the 2015 Doris Duke Artist Award. The award recognizes work in contemporary dance, jazz, theater and related interdisciplinary areas and aims to invest in the future of dedicated artists. It provides artists with a grant of $225,000-$275,000 to empower them with the freedom and resources to reach their full potential.
Carlson is also an artist in residence at the UCLA Center for the Art of Performance. She creates dance, performance, theater, visual and conceptual art. Her art takes place in a broad range of settings, from dairy farms, mountainsides and ponds to concert halls, opera houses and museums. She is currently reimagining her work, "The Symphonic Body," which will bring together members of the UCLA community to perform gestural portraits that create a window into the life, activity and labor of UCLA.
Carlson has received many previous honors, including two American Masters Awards, a USA Artist Award, a Doris Duke Award for New Work and a Rockefeller Seed Grant. She has also complete fellowships with the Guggenheim, the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University.
