The State Bar of California has honored the Los Angeles HIV Law and Policy Project (LA HLPP) — a collaboration between the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, the Disability Rights Law Center, Inner City Law Center and Los Angeles County Bar Association’s AIDS Legal Services Project — with the 2015 Distinguished Pro Bono Service Award. The award is bestowed upon California attorneys who have provided or enabled the direct provision of legal services to underprivileged persons or to organizations whose primary purpose is to provide legal services free of charge to low-income clients.
LA HLPP is recognized for its voluntary contributions — legal intake, referral and/or representation and education and outreach on HIV-related legal issues — that have resulted in increased access to services by the disadvantaged. The project was established to help ensure that people living with HIV/AIDS have access to health care, housing, citizenship and employment. Since 2013, it has served as the center and outreach program for HIV-related legal issues in L.A. County and performed litigation and policy work on issues that affect people living with HIV/AIDS. LA HLPP is led by newly elected director Ayako Miyashita, a Williams Institute inaugural Brian Belt HIV Law and Policy fellow.
