"America is Hard to See," the inaugural exhibition of the Whitney Museum of American Art at its new location in New York's Meatpacking District, includes works by six faculty in UCLA's Department of Art. The exhibition draws from works already showing at the Whitney and tracks the course of American artwork from the early 20th century until present day.
Featured in the exhibitition from UCLA are:
- Andrea Fraser, whose work typically centers around performance, video and project-based art
- Catherine Opie, a photographer noted for her striking portraits and understated landscapes
- Barbara Kruger, known for her distinctive image and text pieces
- Lari Pittman, noted for his meticulously layered painting and works on paper
- Charles Ray, whose work typically focuses on sculpture and modeling
- Paul McCarthy, professor emeritus, whose works include performance, installation, film and "painting as action"
Also being shown are works by the late Chris Burden, a renowned conceptual artist who was noted for his performance, sculpture and installation art.
