Baljit Khakh, executive vice chair of physiology and a professor of physiology and neurobiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was one of 12 scientists chosen for the National Institutes of Health’s Pioneer Award.
The award was created to challenge scientists to develop innovative approaches with the potential to produce an unusually high impact on a broad area of biomedical or behavioral research.
Khakh's laboratory studies the physiology of astrocytes, star-shaped cells believed to regulate brain-cell function. The work has direct relevance to neurological and psychiatric disorders.
