Richard Kaner of chemistry and biochemistry and Katherine Stone of law have been selected by the UCLA Academic Senate as recipients of the 115th and 116th Faculty Research Lectureships respectively for the 2013-14.
Each year, two of UCLA’s most distinguished scholars are chosen to receive one of the highest honors given by the Academic Senate. While one recipient is selected from the natural sciences, the other is chosen from the humanities, social disciplines or creative arts.
Kaner, a distinguished professor who holds a joint appointment in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry as well as the Department of Material Science & Engineering, will deliver a public lecture in fall 2013. Stone, the Arjay and Frances Fearing Miller distinguished professor of law, will give her lecture in spring 2014.
Kaner’s expertise is in inorganic chemistry, material science and solid state chemistry, focusing on the synthesis, characterization and application of both inorganic and organic materials. His research group is interested in all aspects of conducting polymers, from the fundamental science of these materials to their development for a wide variety of practical applications.
Stone is a leading expert in labor and employment law in the United States and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship Award in 2008 and a Russell Sage Fellowship for 2008-2009 for her work on the changing nature of employment and the regulatory implications.
“We look forward to having our distinguished faculty give the campus and greater UCLA community an opportunity to understand and recognize their scholarly achievements,” said Linda Sarna, chair of the Academic Senate, in announcing their selection.
