The Trump administration has frozen hundreds of science, medical and other federal grants to UCLA worth nearly $200 million, citing the university’s alleged “discrimination” in admissions and failure to “promote a research environment free of antisemitism.”… [UCLA Chancellor Julio] Frenk called the government’s decision “deeply disappointing” and “a loss for Americans across the nation whose work, health, and future depend on the groundbreaking work we do.”

With the 2028 Olympics and other global events set for L.A. on the horizon, a coalition of universities, nonprofits and local agencies has launched ShadeLA, an initiative to expand cooling infrastructure across the city. Led by USC Dornsife Public Exchange — a program that connects researchers with policymakers — and UCLA’s Luskin Center for Innovation, the project is focused not only on where shade is needed most, but also on how to build it in ways that last. She said it amounted to a windfall for companies that chose to pay penalties rather than produce more efficient cars.

Newsom seeks to raise $18 billion for wildfire fund | Los Angeles Times

The insured property losses alone could be as much as $15.2 billion, according to an estimate released by state officials last week. That amount does not include uninsured losses or damages beyond those to property, such as wrongful death claims. A study by UCLA estimated losses at $24 billion to $45 billion.

Newsom wants a special election on redistricting in November | Modesto Bee

Newsom said he wants to call a special election for voters to weigh in, but lawmakers may not need to do that, according to a new memo from UCLA researchers. The paper from the UCLA Voting Rights Project said that while the state Constitution explicitly requires the state’s redistricting commission to draw new maps after every decennial census, it does not take away the Legislature’s authority to conduct reapportionment as well.

There is also evidence of racial prejudice. A 2020 report by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that Black people were five times as likely to be held in the New Jersey program as white people, the starkest racial disparity of any such treatment program in the nation.
