“The first May Day was in Chicago in 1886, and that was a time when working people were trying to gain the eight-hour workday. So, it was a period of unrest around the length of the work day, there were a lot of strikes, and there was a big conflict with the police on May 4th 1886 that sort of sparked the commemoration of that event,” said UCLA’s Tobias Higbie. Gang experts who spoke with CNN, however, say the tattoos alone are not proof of membership in MS-13. “I see a bunch of symbols that could be interpreted any number of ways,” Jorja Leap, a University of California, Los Angeles, professor who has served as an expert gang witness in court, told CNN. “There is nothing in those tattoos that is definitively gang representative.”
