The path from a bone-crunching contact sport to a healing profession may seem odd at first, said Patrick Hill, a former fullback and running back for the Tennessee Titans who described his roles as two of “the most violent positions on the field.”… Hill, 37, is an inpatient psychiatric nurse at UCLA Medical Center who has also worked in various intensive care units. The profession provides the teamwork and complete absorption that he remembers from playing ball. (Hill was also featured by ABC’s “Good Morning America.”)

A new study from The Civil Rights Project at the University of California, Los Angeles, has identified a pattern of extreme segregation by race and class in California’s K-12 schools. According to the authors, California has two racially identifiable advantaged groups, White and Asian students, who are less likely to be enrolled in schools of concentrated poverty than their Black, Latinx, and American Indian peers.

“Homeowners need more direct support and clarity,” says Gabriella Carmona, a senior research analyst at UCLA’s Latino Policy and Politics Institute, who cowrote a new analysis about the issues facing fire survivors. That report found that a small percentage of survivors have sold their properties, and roughly 70% have yet to take any steps to rebuild. Black homeowners, who were disproportionately affected by the Eaton Fire, were more likely to be stalled in their progress nine months on.
