Alleviating the Housing Crisis: Where’s the Money?
In 2016, Angelenos voted to tax themselves an extra $1 billion over 10 years with Proposition HHH in order to tackle homelessness. Six years on, the money is being shared around, but where is the affordable housing? In what is bound to be a lively debate, KCRW radio journalist Anna Scott speaks with agency and city leaders about why the urban housing crisis appears to be as painful — and shameful — as ever. Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR), a UCLA–supported environmental organization, hosts this free film, arts and community festival at Los Angeles State Historic Park to celebrate the restoration and cultural revival of the once-forgotten L.A. River. Short environmental films about the river, 20+ interactive and educational booths, a river-centric story slam and FoLAR’s 38-foot mobile museum are all part of the fun. What happens when a violent uprising traps you in a seemly impenetrable sanctuary, and yet you still feel an overwhelming hunger for takeout pizza? This Geffen Playhouse production, a dark satire questioning society’s obsession with personal safety over investing in our shared community, was written by Ovation Award nominee Ramiz Monsef as part of the theater’s Writers’ Room program. It’s literally Christmas in July: The UCLA Film & Television Archive presents Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence on the last of three consecutive nights of screenings dedicated to the late composer and producer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away on March 28. The critically praised but grueling 1983 film pits another music luminary, David Bowie in the role of a Second World War prisoner, against Sakamoto, who plays a troubled POW camp commander. It was Sakamoto’s first acting role, as well as his first film score — he would go on to share an Academy Award for The Last Emperor and work with directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, John Maybury and Oliver Stone. The 124-minute film will be screened at the Billy Wilder Theater.

Curator Erin Christovale speaks with Mariah Garnett and Gelare Khoshgozaran, two artists featured in the Hammer’s Full Burn exhibition, about how they created experimental documentaries based upon the museum’s extensive permanent collection. An audience Q&A and a reception with light refreshments follows. Admission is free.

Telegrams From the Edge: The Message Picture on the Age of Noir
This series highlights the 1940s and ’50s Hollywood movies designed to “provoke thought instead of entertainment.” That lofty ambition, however, disguises the raw emotional power of groundbreaking films, such as the original The Day the Earth Stood Still and its tough environmental message, or I Want to Live!, an anti-capital-punishment story that earned Susan Hayward an Oscar in 1959. This program of free screenings will be on show at the Billy Wilder Theater.

An animated sing-along for kids and parents, 2016’s Sing galvanizes the classic Broadway plot of “let’s put on a show” with a jumbo pop songbook of more than 60 songs, including an original by Stevie Wonder, featuring Ariana Grande. The familiar voice talents include koala maestro Matthew McConaughey, punk-rock porcupine Scarlett Johansson and Seth MacFarlane as a Sinatra-styling mouse. The free screening will be at the Billy Wilder Theater.

The San Jose Earthquakes, led by captain Jackson Yueill (U.S. national team midfielder who played two seasons at UCLA from 2015–16), will take on the L.A. Galaxy at Stanford Stadium for California bragging rights in Major League Soccer. Tickets for UCLA match attendees are reserved in prime rows of upper section 216, which provide beautiful views of the entire pitch and the north goalmouth area in particular. The instructor Michal Rinkevich M.B.A. ’14 is the VP of wellness services at McGriff, where she consults on wellness strategy and designs award-winning employee wellness programs for corporate clients. Rinkevich completed her master’s degree at UCLA, where she created mindfulness programs for M.B.A. students, alumni and staff, and coached the UCLA gymnastics team on stress management and mindfulness.
