In memoriam

Ralph H. Turner, a UCLA sociologist who played a founding role in the development of the field of collective behavior and social movements, died April 5 in Los Angeles at the age of 94.

Peter Thomas Dalis, who served as director of athletics at UCLA for 19 years, died Saturday, Nov.15, at his home in Pacific Palisades due to complications from multiple myeloma.

Professor emeritus of anthropology Peter Hammond, who traveled the world for his academic studies and ethnographic research, died on Oct. 4 in Los Angeles. He was 86.

Natividad “Nati” Cano, Grammy-winning mariachi leader and former director of the Music of Mexico Ensemble at UCLA, died Oct. 3. Cano played a major role in bringing mariachi music from local cafes to concert halls around the world.

Dr. Bramah N. Singh, a renowned UCLA cardiologist who pioneered a novel classification system used by researchers and clinicians worldwide to study and develop anti-arrhythmic medications, died on Sept. 20 at his home in Encino. He was 76.

Gerald Wilson, 96, a music legend who enlivened packed jazz history classes at UCLA with his memories of working with Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles and other jazz icons, died Sept. 8 at his home in Los Angeles two weeks after contracting pneumonia.

Dr. Saleh Salehmoghaddam died on Sept. 11, in Los Angeles. He was 66. For more than 30 years, he served as an exceptionally devoted physician and teacher.

Dr. John L. Fahey, an emeritus professor in UCLA's departments of microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics and of medicine, and a key member of the UCLA AIDS Institute, died on Aug. 19, 2014.

Dr. George Bartzokis, a UCLA neuroscientist who originated the theory that the degeneration of the brain’s myelin contributed to many developmental and degenerative diseases, died on August 22.

Robert Sbordone, an authority in clinical neuropsychology, traumatic brain damage and post-traumatic stress disorder and a former researcher at UCLA’s NeuroPsychiatric Institute, passed away on Aug. 3 in Mission Viejo, California.

Dr. Joseph K. Perloff, the founding director of the Ahmanson/UCLA Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center, died Aug. 18 at his home in Pacific Palisades, Calif., of complications from coronary artery disease. He was 89.

Geoffrey Mess, a professor of mathematics who made important contributions to topology and geometric group theory, has died after an extended illness. He was 54.

George Hilton, a UCLA professor of transportation economics, died Aug. 4 of heart failure at Lorien Health Park in Columbia, Maryland.

Mats Gunnar Granlund, a staff member in UCLA’s Graduate Division, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on July 3 while engaging in one of his favorite activities — playing squash at UCLA’s John Wooden Center. He was 61.

In nearly 30 years as a faculty member and administrator at UCLA, Rich led efforts to improve undergraduate education, increased support for teaching and played a key role in restructuring the professional schools and academic programs to enhance academic quality.

Michael Intriligator, a professor of economics, political science and public policy at UCLA who played an influential role in the establishment of the School of Public Affairs, died on June 23 after a three-year battle with melanoma. 

Robert Steinberg, UCLA professor emeritus of mathematics, died on May 25. He was 92.

Penelope (Penny) Hein-Unruh, UCLA associate vice chancellor for academic advising in the College of Letters and Science, died May 8 in her home in Los Angeles.

Marjorie Eloise Lund Crump, who did significant work in public service and entrepreneurship and who, together with her husband Ralph, was a major supporter of UCLA, died of natural causes on April 1 at her home in Trumbull, Conn.   Over

Aaron S. Cohen, a Southern California engineering entrepreneur and an influential and generous supporter of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, died on March 21 in Los Angeles.

James Lockhart, a UCLA emeritus professor who was regarded as one of the most original, accomplished scholars in the field of early Latin American history, died Jan. 17 in Bakersfield surrounded by his family.

In Memoriam: Stella Nadelman Krieger, manager of the Fowler Museum Store who made it popular stop because of the unique, handcrafted items from around the world she displayed there, died Nov. 21.

Suzanne M. Bianchi, a UCLA sociologist who helped define the field of family demography with her research into the dramatic changes in the American family in the latter half of the 20th century, died Nov. 4. She was 61.

Robin Scott Fisher, an internationally known UCLA neuroscientist and anatomist who made seminal contributions to understanding the development and function of the central nervous system, died of a heart attack on Nov. 11 in Philadelphia. He was 61.

Donald F. McCallum, 74, a scholar whose work had a significant impact on the field of Japanese art history, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, at his home in Santa Monica after battling sudden metastatic prostate cancer.
