The museum welcomed cultural and civic leaders, artists, collectors, patrons of the arts and entertainment world notables to the 17th annual Gala in the Garden. 

‘On Display in the Walled City’ runs until March 8, 2020 and features 38 objects from the British Empire Exhibition staged almost a century ago.

Featured among the 200-plus events: Lari Pittman, Lucinda Childs, Wendy Whelan and Ain Gordon.

“Through Positive Eyes,” which runs Sept. 15 through Feb. 16, 2020, aims to help end the stigma around HIV/AIDS and empower people who are living with the virus.

Exhibition will include approximately 80 paintings and 50 works on paper drawn from the Hammer’s own holdings as well as from public and private collections.

Q&A with Miriam Posner, assistant professor of information studies and digital humanities, on the growth of museums putting more of their collections online.

UCLA’s Centennial Celebration features four initiatives.

“India’s Subterranean Stepwells: Photographs by Victoria Lautman” showcases the massive water storage systems and runs May 5 through Oct. 20.

Also in this section: stories on the Hammer Museum, brain mapping and the Olympics.

“Guatemalan Masks: Selections from the Jim and Jeanne Pieper Collection” is an exhibition of 80 remarkable carved wooden faces depicting animals, folk personae, and historic figures.

Artists who donated works include Mark Bradford, Judy Chicago, Barbara Kruger, Catherine Opie, Christina Quarles, Ed Ruscha and Ai Weiwei.

“Dressed with Distinction: Garments from Ottoman Syria” features a collection assembled by David and Elizabeth Reisbord and will be on view March 17 through Aug. 18.

Featured among the 150-plus events: Maggie Nelson, Stan Douglas, Sarah Lucas and Kyle Abraham.

“Inheritance: Recent Video Art from Africa,” features the work of three artists and opens Feb. 17 and will remain on view through July 28.

Meredith Monk, Allen Ruppersberg, Batsheva and Lars Müller are among those featured among the 150-plus events, which include exhibitions, lectures, screenings and performances.

The exhibition of portraits by Pableaux Johnson showcase Second Line Parades, the jubilant processions organized by African American social aid and pleasure clubs.

The acclaimed biennial will be co-curated by Tunisian-French writer and curator Myriam Ben Salah and Lauren Mackler, a curator based in Los Angeles.

The annual Gala in the Garden supports the Hammer Museum at UCLA’s internationally acclaimed exhibitions and public programs, which are free to the public.

“Summoning the Ancestors” explores a comprehensive collection of bronzes — 76 bells and 73 ǫfǫ (small objects derived from wooden staffs of power).

Featured among the 150-plus events: Taylor Mac, Theaster Gates, Fran Lebowitz, Monika Baer, Judy Baca and Juliana Huxtable.

“World on the Horizon: Swahili Arts Across the Indian Ocean,” an exhibition that challenges fixed and familiar notions of places like Africa, opens Oct. 21.

“South of No North: Gato Negro Ediciones,” is a dynamic installation of risograph prints and runs until Dec. 9.

Of the 32 artists featured in this year’s exhibition, 11 are Bruins and 10 of those got degrees from the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture.

The show of works from the permanent collection runs until Sept. 9.

The exhibition “Striking Iron: The Art of African Blacksmiths” contains more than 225 pieces will travel internationally after debuting at UCLA.
