Dr. Henry Takei, distinguished clinical professor of periodontics at UCLA, was recently awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.

Yvonne Chen has received a $1.25 million grant from the Cancer Research Institute to support her research in immunotherapies for cancer.

Elisa Franco has received a $711,000 research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to continuing developing DNA-based synthetic molecules.

Awards recognize faculty members for accomplishments in research, promoting diversity and inclusion and their contributions to educational innovation.

Levine, who is vice chancellor for academic personnel, will provide leadership on campus-wide policy, planning, initiatives and operations from July 1 through Aug. 31.

They honorees are Smadar Naoz, Vickie Mays, Jorge Torres and Sarah Tolbert.

Weizhe Hong, an assistant professor of biological chemistry and neurobiology at UCLA, will receive a three-year grant of $225,000 to advance his research.

Dr. Manish Butte of UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital is leading the team that has received $650,000 from University of California Research Initiatives.

Dr. Keith Nuechterlein has received the 2019 Outstanding Clinical/Community Research Award from the Schizophrenia International Research Society.

Keriann Backus was named 2019 Beckman Young Investigator by the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation.

Sam Emaminejad, UCLA assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, has received a PATHS-UP grant.

Stephanie Jamison, distinguished professor of Asian languages and cultures and Indo-European studies, was honored by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres.

Zrinka Stahuljak, professor of comparative literature in the UCLA College, will serve as the center’s director beginning July 1.

Dr. Fola May, a member of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, received a grant from the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute.

Led by Jill Horwitz, “Restatement of the Law, Charitable Nonprofit Organizations” describes the legal issues that confront charitable nonprofit institutions.

Adnan Darwiche and Rafail Ostrovsky received the 2019 J.P. Morgan Faculty Awards.

Michael Jung, UCLA distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry, has been named to the position, which is created by the chancellor’s office.

Karida Brown, assistant professor of sociology, and Robert Dallek, professor emeritus of history, have been named to the project’s advisory board.

Joanna Schwartz was cited by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor in her opinion on the Nieves v. Bartlett case.

Dr. Elizabeth Barnert, an assistant professor of pediatrics at UCLA, has received an Outstanding New Member Science Award from the society.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers named an award after Asad Madni to honor his accomplishments and leadership.

M. Norton Wise, distinguished research professor emeritus of history in the UCLA College, received the Sarton Medal for his lifetime achievements.

Achuta Kadambi received the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Research Initiation Initiative award from the National Science Foundation.

Sharon Gerstel was appointed inaugural director of the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture.
