UCLA Magazine has been named the best in-house or corporate publication in Southern California by the Los Angeles Press Club, which announced the honor at its annual awards ceremony for outstanding achievements in journalism on June 22 in downtown Los Angeles.

The Press Club, one of the oldest and most respected journalist organizations in the country, also recognized UCLA Magazine with individual silver and bronze awards in writing and reporting categories.

In presenting the top award for the magazine’s fall 2024 print edition, which featured a cover story commemorating the last of legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden’s NCAA championships, the Press Club’s judges said, “The mark of a good in-house magazine is sometimes to toe a fine line between specificity and mass appeal, and this issue accomplishes both in one fell swoop, while giving the reader a glimpse into the storied spirit of UCLA.”

Deadline Hollywood and USC’s Dornsife College magazine took the second and third spots.

In addition, the Press Club bestowed a silver award on magazine contributor Ed Leibowitz in the visual arts–design–architecture feature category for his profile of renowned Los Angeles architect and UCLA alumnus Eric Owen Moss in the fall 2024 print issue. And UCLA Magazine’s managing editor John Harlow collected a bronze award in the science reporting category for his on-the-ground reporting from Cameroon on UCLA’s Congo Basin Institute, which appeared in the magazine’s summer 2024 digital issue.

Earlier this month, UCLA Magazine’s fall 2024 issue won an honorable mention in the annual publication category at the PR News Nonprofit Awards, which also recognized UCLA’s Broadcast Studio with an honorable mention in the video category for its “This Is UCLA” Big 10 campaign video.

For UCLA Magazine, the latest accolades come on the heels of a 2024 gold medal for best annual print publication from the Council for the Advancement of Secondary Education (CASE) for its 2023 print edition, which followed a silver medal for the magazine’s 2022 print issue.

“We are deeply humbled and gratified that people continue to discover and recognize our innovative and creative storytelling and are responding to it so enthusiastically,” said Michael Callahan, the magazine’s editorial director. “We look forward to producing many more great stories that highlight the unique value UCLA brings to the nation and around the world.”
